Our Mission
The mission of spillthedish is to give a voice to restaurant and other service workers. We combine visibility into workplace conditions with the power of the consumer to bring about a win-win-win scenario for workers, business owners, and consumers.
We crowd-source reviews of restaurants and other workplaces from the perspective of the employees, helping workers find good places to work and putting community pressure on employers to treat their workers well. Your review is always completely anonymous. We also provide links to legal information on workers' rights.
One of our primary concerns is the common negative cultural aspects of service jobs:
- Sexual Harassment, such as:
- Unwelcome touching
- Sexual innuendo
- Coercion for sex
- Verbal and Physical Abuse, such as:
- Hitting, cutting or burning
- Bullying
- Yelling and abusive language
- Discrimination, such as:
- Use of slurs
- Assigning less desirable jobs or shifts based on race, age, or sex
- Threats based on immigration status
- Wage Theft, such as
- Asked to work unpaid, off-shift hours
- Unpaid tips
- Paychecks delayed or missed
In the current pandemic, companies should have appropriate policies and adequate supplies to ensure the safety of their employees, including:
- Providing masks, gloves, sanitizer, cleaning supplies as appropriate
- Policies regarding vaccinations
- Policies regarding social distancing
- Allowing adequate shift time for cleaning
We also collect information on issues (gaps) that are common in the service industry, such as:
- Vacation, Holiday, & Sick Leave
- Health Insurance
- 401(k)
- Scheduling
- Training and Career Development
- Other Benefits
Because retaliation is a big concern, especially in small businesses, the anonymity of our reviewers is our paramount concern.
- We will never ask for your name.
- We will never display your email ID or any other identifying information. We take every precaution to ensure no one can even know you are registered.
- Our questionnaire is multiple choice. You do not have to write anything which could be used to identify you. Your answers are combined with the other reviews, and no results are displayed until there are at least 3 reviews.
- You rate workplace on an emotional scale, based on how it makes you feel in each of the areas:
- Green: Good. You feel your workplace is a good place to work in this respect. E.g. you haven't seen or experienced any discrimination.
- Yellow: Just ok. It's not perfect, but you are able to shrug it off. E.g. sometimes there will be an inappropriate comment but you shrug it off.
- Orange: Poor. This is a problem that lowers your morale and may affect your job performance.
- Red: Terrible. This aspect of your workplace is horrible and it makes it difficult to go to work. You dream about finding another job where this is better.
- Although we ask for race, gender, job description, and pay, this is never displayed; it will be used only for analysis across companies. Only your color choices will be displayed.
In a business with multiple locations, a good or bad site manager can make all the difference. We evaluate each location independently, so workers know whether to avoid certain locations.
Staff turnover is one of the most challenging problems a restaurateur faces. We help owners and management understand why people leave, and provide tips from fellow restaurateurs and lawyers on how to address problems and avoid legal issues.
More and more, consumers are voting with their wallets. People want to know whether workers are treated ethically, and who gets the tips they're leaving. We keep diners informed of the workplace conditions of the people who are making and serving their food.
